Gallery Wall Ideas

Here is another facet of me: I love art, art prints, illustrations, and anything beautifully framed. Living in a small apartment I am constantly challenged to withstand a new acquisition as I've already started just leaning framed art against the wall. However, I have been desirous for quite a long time about one specific decoration project: my own little gallery wall.

I don't know how it's with you, but I feel a bit insecure about it. The variety of prints and pictures, the diversity of frames and unframed solutions, the question of where to install the gallery wall and the final layout of it - all this seems so overwhelming that I have been postponing the project for quite a while. But soon, yes soon, I will tackle this open task. I was thinking of laying out all my prints and illustrations on the floor and thus creating a specific layout that works for me. I will have to buy a few more frames and then the hammering can begin. If you are thinking of the same, I've found a great step-by-step guide here. I've also decided that I am more the variations kind of guy - that means, I prefer different frames, sizes, shapes, colours. At least I think so. And if not, I will have yet another project to procrastinate. Do you have a gallery wall? Any tips? Questions? Let me know!

  1. Igor, go for it. You won't be sorry. You know the best galleries I've seen have not been over analysed, over thought but just done on instinct. The idea of mix and match is a must I think!!!

Go on and then take a pic for us x

  2. I would go for n. 2! - different shapes, maybe a little more space between frames + you're right you should try to see the whole composition on the floor before, clever idea. Can't wait to see what you decide to do! :)

  3. I love this idea - one of my favorite things seeing lots of different sized prints, paintings in different types of frames on one wall. I have done it a few times before and always find it best to lay them out on the floor first to get the layout - then mark on the wall where you want the highest point to be and the lowest and widest and you can fit them all in amongst it. Can't wait to see the result - I always get carried away pinning on pinterest - sure you don't need any inspiration as always full of your own - but just in case - http://pinterest.com/nostalgiaexch/wall-coverings/
    Good luck with it

  4. Particularly love 2 and 3 Igor. U could also cut out newspaper sizes and stick them on the wall first to check the layout. It will look stunning-go for it-you will be pleased you did! :-)

  5. I've been thinking about the same project for a year now (I'm slowly collecting my art work). I want my gallery wall over my bed (like head boeard of sort). I'm still wondering if i want it simetrical with the same kind of frames or different frames and eclectic to give it a little "rendom" feel. I don't know, it's a tough project.

  6. I adore a gallery wall I think it just adds so much interest and character to a space! I have several around the house seeing as I love art as well and collecting it. The master of gallery walls is designer Thomas O'Brien you should google him or buy his book(American Modern) he is amazing and he too lives in a small space. Good luck Igor just take the plunge!

  7. Sounds like a fun project! And you have been thinking about it a while, so I also say do it! Here's a wall collage layout templates sheet I found - http://pinterest.com/pin/183592122280265492/
Maybe you don't have to go with a specific one there, but one of them could be a good starting point ...

Wishing you a fun project :)

  8. Oh I share the same thoughts with you on this project! I have illustrations and art and frames but I still have my white walls empty! Don't over think it because you'll never do it, have a glass of wine, play your favorite music and your favorite frames will be hanging on the wall in no time! I think that Gallery idea 1. suits better for a small apartment!

    Have a lovely day!

  10. I am crazy about walls from top to bottom with pictures in different variants. As an interior architect I really like a well structured, clear, open space BUT privately I just gave up. Over and over again, I've tried to keep it by a small group and after 3 months, the whole wall is full! My eyes want it just like that! Just follow your belly feeling, Igor. Who knows best what makes you happy!
My absolute favorite book right now to this point, with so many cool and casual inspirations (I'm sure, you know that one):http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0810984865?ie=UTF8&tag=theselby-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0810984865

    Happy evening!

  12. U won't be surprised Igor that I quiver at the thought of a gallery wall - too much clutter for Mr Walnut Grey. I'm a one wall one picture kinda guy... maybe two or 3 pics at most. Just make sure they're all straight & happy together ;-)
