Book Review: 'Home For Now' By Joanna Thornhill

I've been living in a rented apartment for seven years now and that includes all restraints of a rented space - double-checking before painting the walls, reconsidering every nail hammered into the wall, no major changes regarding layout or buying customized furniture. Because it's a home for now. Not forever. And that's exactly where interior stylist and writer Joanna Thornhill has stepped in with her new book - 'Home for Now' published by Cico Books.

With this book, Joanna is filling a gap in the exuberant interiors books market with many interchangeable titles. Her book offers a blend of inspiration and practical advice for renters as well as first-time buyers with limited funds for decoration or renovation. The book guides the reader through five consecutive chapters covering all major rooms of a home-for-now: living spaces, kitchens and dining, bedrooms and bathrooms, creative workspaces and plants and outdoor living. Of course I was totally smitten that houseplants got their own chapter (with outdoor spaces)!

The book offers a plethora of real-life interiors and practical step-by-step projects for anyone - even the DIY-phobic dwellers like myself. What I really liked while going through the book is its great variety in styles and ideas - it showcases that even a home-for-now has the full potential to be a beautiful home. No matter whether you have poor floors or walls, limited daylight influx or a disadvantageous layout - a few tweaks and you'll create a home to be happy and comfy in it. And the book 'Home for Now' is an excellent guide and inspiration source to help you along the way of decorating or renovating your home.

As a home-for-now dweller I love having this book in my shelf - and I am pretty sure I will reread it over again when I feel the need to change my temporary home.

You can buy the book HERE.

    1. Haha good question! I am joking. I think the book was more focused on UK based homes.

  3. Hi Igor! I'm another for-now-dweller, living in Malmö in the south of Sweden. I just came back to this city and moved in to a one room apartment with kitchen. My room has one black wall, witch I like, but the rest of the walls are in an ugly green. I'm thinking of painting them white or grey - or maybe both? It looks like you have black and grey and white in your apartment. Is it mixed in one room? Any advice? I want to add colour in textiles, prints and of coures plants :-) but I also want to mix it up with wood, natural fibers in baskets, wool, mabye a sheep skin...

    1. Hi Maria, thank you got your comment! I live in a 32 m2 apartment with two rooms that are connected with an open arch. Since it's a rooftop apartment I have two pitched walls that I painted in a very dark grey (looks almost like black) and one wall in the living room in a lighter grey. The rest is white. I like the more sophisticated, structured look of it. If I lived in one room, I'd stick to one painted feature wall probably. But if you like to add a second shade, maybe a partly painted wall could be a cool idea, like here: http://pinterest.com/pin/54324739229741439/ And yes, combine different textures and materials to make it look interesting and comfy. Just don't overdo it in a small space and try to keep it as tidy and organized as possible - it can quickly get a crazy clutter in a small apartment. I know what I'm talking about:-))

    2. Thank you Igor! So nice of you to take time to answer :-) The wall in the pin you linked to looks nice, I will think about that as an opition. I like that the border between the white and the colour is not strict and sharpe. I will try not to squeez in everything I like in this small place (39 m2) but I gave away the majority of my things last year so I'm not approaching crazy clutter yet anyway :-) I bought some more plants today, and that really gives more life to the place. Just pinned some of your Urban Jungle Blogger-pins :-)
