Styling The 606 Shelving System By Vitsoe

Last Thursday I shared a few flower shots and told you a quick story about a very efficient day including a blogger event. Today I want to share the rest of the story and the remaining pics of a busy and hot summer day in Munich town. So join me to the blogger styling event for the Danish design brand Vitsoe in their new showroom in Munich.

I got in touch with Vitsoe for the first time during my design blogger tour to Copenhagen in June (see the report HERE). Thus I was pretty happy when I got an invitation to a blogger event in their new showroom in Munich too. Even though I was a bit late to the event due to my work and I arrived pretty much empty-handed (I only brought my favorite Paris vase and a bunch of fresh roses that I bought just around the corner), I had lots of fun. First of all I was welcomed by the nice staff and got a swift introduction to the iconic 606 universal shelving system designed by Dieter Rams back in 1960 and produced by Vitsoe ever since.

I was pretty impressed how easy it is to change the shelves, adjust heights and widths with different modules and thus create your very own shelving system. Due to its modular concept, this shelving system seems to be an ideal solution not only for spacious homes but also for rather tricky, small apartments. Hence I was particularly interested!

Now some of you might think the shelving system looks rather bland. But Dieter Rams' designs speak of a minimalistic aesthetic of functionalism that focuses on the essence of clear lines and the longevity of good design. And after all, it's your personal shelf styling that adds the necessary dash of personality. So this was our task - styling our own shelving unit. Luckily I bumped into some of my blogger friends at the event and managed to borrow a few props - a Jonathan Adler owl, a quirky bunny lamp, a mini van, I used a few books from the showroom and I found nougat candies from France which perfectly matched my Paris vase. A chalkboard unit was inserted into my shelving with my 'happy' signature - and voilà, my little, quick styling was finished. The colours, the textures, the layering, the shapes - the variety works for me and it looks unpretentious yet happy. At the end we were invited to a yummy ice cream in the showroom and after a long and busy day I concluded: Mission accomplished!

  5. I have just collapsed in a heap on the floor & am in the process of picking myself up & composing myself... you didn't just use the word 'bland' in the context of Dieter Rams' 606 Universal Shelving System? One of the best representations of 'good design' anywhere. A veritable classic... ;-)

Love your own personal styling as always Igor :-)

    1. Haha I hope the fall was cushioned by cheerful cushions - ah, you don't have cushions, right! LOL No, no, I just said some might think it's bland (maybe better: plain, no-frill), but I personally really like it and would love it for myself!!

    2. It's OK. I've recovered now ;-) I would have said clean and unobtrusive... and yes I so want this system for myself too. Will definitely have to buy it one day.
