Super Normal: Tiipoi

What is Tiipoi? First thing I learned during our DesignBloggers Tour in London last week: it’s a young and thriving British design brand with Indian roots. Second learning followed immediately while Spandana Gopal, the founder of Tiipoi, told us about the word’s meaning: it actually signifies a sort of small tripod stool that the British colonist interpreted as a tea table (well of course). Since Tiipoi seems to be an obvious link between India and Britain from a design perspective, this seemed an appropriate name for this up-and-coming lifestyle label.

The tripod stool is a typical Indian object for daily life that qualifies as the ‚super normal’. This concept has been picked up by Tiipoi in the sense that they refer to a very Indian design ethos – the celebration of the normal objects that are designed and made to last for a lifetime and beyond. Influenced by this Indian tradition as well as the contemporary vision of Jasper Morrison and his ‚super normal’ concept, Tiipoi has launched a small and fine selection of objects for the daily use.
Their current range of products encompasses kitchen accessories like bowls, containers, jars made of materials typical for India like wood, brass, copper, stainless steel. As a London based label these object also juxtapose the cluttered big city life and reduce their appearance to the very essential in design and aesthetics combined with a longevity that raises its voice against today’s throw-away mentality and consumerism. Our design blogger group was also asked to contribute a 'super normal' object from our daily lives which was then exposed on a gallery wall highlighting the simplicity and functionality of design. Can you guess my 'super normal' object on this wall?

Danish Design Discovery: H. Skjalm P.

After a few of my trips to the Danish capital and design metropolis Copenhagen I wanted to share one of my discoveries with you. At the DesignTrade show I spotted the Danish design brand during my second trip to Copenhagen - H. Skjalm P.

As you might assume the name stands for its founder, Hagbarth Skjalm Petersen, who founded the brand over sixty years ago. Today, H. Skjalm P. is known for beautiful interior décor items as well as great kitchenware. I went to their own store in Copenhagen and couldn't help but leave with a few design souvenirs for myself and I guess you will pretty much understand why I fell in love with the brand when you look at their pictures, right?
And during my trip to Copenhagen last week I had to buy one of the raw brass plant pots and I do love it! Are you a fan of Danish design and did you know H. Skjalm P. before?

Have a great day, friends!

Style Up Your Ikea Cabinets With 'Superfront'

I am often asked what I think of Ikea furniture as an interior design blogger. My answer is always: I like Ikea for it democratized Scandinavian design and made it appreciated and affordable all around the world. But as with any other brand I do not like interiors that are solely equipped with furniture from one store or brand. It is the individual mix and match that makes a home unique and adds character. I also like when people get creative and tweak their Ikea furniture to make them different. Currently, there are a few companies out on the market supporting interior fans when they want to individualize their Ikea furniture. One of them is the pretty new Swedish brand 'Superfront', founded in March 2013 by Mick Born, Sander Aarts and Monica Born.

'Superfront' designs fronts, side panels, handles, tops and legs for some of the most favorite Ikea cabinets like Bestå sideboards and cupboards, Faktum and Metod kitchen cabinets and Pax wardrobes. Interior design fans can combine Ikea's furniture with etched patterns and details in robust classic materials like brass, copper, marble, birch wood and leather.

One of the founders explains the inspiration for 'Superfront': "We noticed a very clear pattern among our friends and acquaintances. Almost all of them had some sort of cabinet base from Ikea that they had pimped with specially made doors from a local carpenter. Many of them even added marble tops. It was a bit like seeing Ikea dressed in Prada", says Mick Born.

The wide assortment of fronts and accessories enables almost endless combinations. And all this comes with a very reasonable price tag. Thus, your Ikea furniture will not only become individual but will also look way more expensive than it actually is - a good deal for both, your design loving eye and your wallet.

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Green Festive Vignette

December is upon us and so it is clear that this month's 'Urban Jungle Bloggers' post must be a festive one. Including the essential green vibe. Thus, our topic this month is called 'Green Festive Vignette'. When it comes to festive Christmas decoration, there are basically two types of approaches: a bold and full-force decor sweeping blow or a more moderate, simple vignette. I used to be a bit more the former, nowadays I am rather the latter. This year definitely. My Christmas décor includes very few elements: fairy lights, some copper stars, an advent candle, a wooden Christmas tree and a green wreath.

As an avid urban jungle blogger I have opted for a very simple green wreath that I bought on the local farmers' market. It is a small sized wreath, just big enough to fit in my advent candle from Skandinavisk. I have added a small copper star from Louise Roe (and two larger ones in the background), my wooden Christmas tree and a small copper vase from H. Skjalm P. Since I love my plants, I couldn't help but add my tiny little succulent babies that I've received from my fellow urban jungle blogger Judith and planted in a yoghurt pot.

The entire set-up is pleasing my eye. I like the serene combination of green, brown/wooden hues and copper elements. It fits perfectly on my sideboard with the mounted walnut mirror and creates a warm, cosy and festive atmosphere.

Which type of festive decorator are you?

5 Happy Inspirations: Refresh Your Interiors

Hello my friends! I'm back after a little getaway to sunny Greece and a fabulous design hotel. Soon more here on the blog. But for the time being let us indulge in a new '5 Happy Inspirations' post.

Some of you might know that I am one of those indecisive persons when it comes to interior design, styling and decoration. I love colourful details, I like natural styles with lots of wood, I adore rich textures and patterns with an ethnic vibe. Chaotic? Maybe. But one could also say eclectic, right? It's all about how you mix and interpret the pieces.

So this week's five happy finds have also one thing in common - the happiness they bring into a home. But let us have a closer look at those goodies:

1. My German fellow blogger Kai of Stilsucht has launched his first product in collaboration with the designer Thomas Schmitz. The hook named 'Cliffhanger' has its natural habitat in primarily - but not exclusively - typical German 'Altbau' (old buildings) high ceilinged, raw, pre war buildings, since two parallel water pipes are necessary to utilize the clever helper which is simply clipped between them.

2. Add a dash of summer with the 'Palm Trays' by Smart Living Objects. Made of rubber wood and coated with summery hues they are perfect to make you smile, even with the current weather!

3. I 'luuuuv' me some copper! How about this sleek pendant light with polished copper and a textile cable by the Dutch design team Ontwerpduo with Vij5? Yes, iconic Dutch design!

4. Cushions are my soft spot. And this one with a calming natural look is my 'coup de coeur' - the 'Sea Grass Cushion' by Nordic Elements is on my wish list!

5. The 'Lock' bamboo dinner table by the Dutch design label Plankton is an eye-catcher due to its spectacular base. Moreover, it's made of sustainably grown bamboo thus good for your home and for our environment!

Happy hump day, folks!

5 Happy Inspirations: Copper Love

To be honest, with this rather unspectacular summer in Germany I sort of am open-minded to think of the upcoming autumn and winter season. What will be hot for interiors? Any colour trends? New decoration ideas? Well, one thing that I really like and would love to see trending in the next season is copper. There've been quite some copper ideas around, but I think there might be more to come in A/W 2012/13. What do you think? Hot or not? Here are '5 Happy Inspirations' visualizing my idea:

1. You don't need real copper for the copper trend. Best proof: This DIY idea by A Merry Mishap.

2. Copper-like cutlery? I'd say yes for a spectacular dinner with friends. Seen on Anthropologie.

3. Copper pipes reinvented as a desk lamp as seen on Inreda Utreda Blogg.

4. Bring the copper trend to the streets, too - for example, with a flashy copper bike. Seen on Wit Industries.

5. This cute Lup candleholder by Hay has been for quite a while on my wish list. Seen on Finnish Design Shop.

Happy Wednesday!
