Friday's Favorite Snapshots

This week I was invited by fellow blogger Christine of 'Somebody's Home' to guest blog on the topic 'home away from home'. As a passionate globetrotter and someone who has lived in various cities across Europe, I could easily connect to the topic of a home away from home. And this made me think: what makes us feel at home? What gives us the soothing comfort of our safe haven even when we live abroad, far away from our beloved ones? And what gives us the good feeling of being an eternal traveler, someone who's at home wherever he settles? 

I won't give any answers to those questions, in fact I can't cause I think it is a very personal idea of feeling at home. I tried to grasp my idea in the guest post here. And I snapped these pics with little memories from my times abroad. Knickknack that makes me reminisce of happy times abroad and that come in handy to decorate my little home. My home away from home. Friday's Favorite Snapshots

Before I'm taking you on a little inspirational travel through the orient, I want to tell you the story behind it first: My family stems from southern Serbia. It's the bordering area between Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and it has always been the orient for me when I was a kid. I was born and raised in Austria, in a typical Western European society, landscape, and visual world. But every year when we traveled down to what then was Yugoslavia, I was embarking on an adventure from 1001 nights. I felt like a kid on a magic carpet discovering a region full of people dressed in folk costumes, cities dotted with mosques and churches, colourful and loud bazars. It was the adventurous life of spending summers at my grandparents' house, dining under the vine covered porch, sitting on lumbar kilim cushions, meeting friends at the village's well. Today, all this seems like a far-away fairytale. 

This private background must be the reason why I still love oriental home accessories like my vintage kilim rug and cushions, hammered metal bowls, mosaic vases. Well, there is one thing from my childhood that I sort of disliked. My mother would always ask me to grind the coffee in one of those old bronze coffee grinders. She would then prepare Turkish mocca. As much as I disliked the grinding as a kid, today I own my mother's old coffee grinder as a dear souvenir of a happy childhood. And a memory of my roots. Happy Friday!

Friday's Favorite Snapshots

Today I want to talk to you briefly about my concept of happiness. I consider myself a happy man. I think of factors like family, love, friends, professional life, my blog, my readers (yes you!). All these bits fuel my inner balance, my positive attitude towards life, my optimism and thus my happiness. For me, these elements fortify the base of my happiness and all those other little tidbits that I blog about let it grow on a daily basis. Just like my last visit to the Muji store.

I headed to the local Muji store cause I had to stock up on coloured pens for a guest blogger project. Once in the store, I couldn't help but roam around and get inspired by the simplicity and sophistication of Japanese design. And the great colour pops. Consequently, I brought back some coloured pens as well as a cute little notebook with multicoloured pages and tiny post-its. The final result are these two snapshots - I love how the colours come to life and remind me of the joys of life. I hope they will bring a tiny bit of happiness to your Friday, too!

Friday's Favorite Snapshots

I've promised one thing and it is long overdue - a little tour of my home. But I promise, it will be online next week. Up to then I will give you another little peek into my tiny little apartment with two favorite snapshots taken this week. 

I've mentioned several times that I'm living in a tiny rooftop apartment. Even though there are many shortcomings with such an apartment, there are some advantages, too. I've learned to deal with limited space, learned to let go of things, to de-clutter continuously and to reinterpret the same structures. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But I am learning. This week I managed to snap a great moment with sunlight gleaming onto my bed and a detail shot of my brand new little marble trinket dish by Anthropologie, which resides happily on my bedside table. I love its delicateness and the soft colours. I hope you liked my two little shots and I'll see you back tomorrow!

Friday's Favorite Snapshots

Well my blog turned one last week so I've decided to tweak my content and keep you all entertained and happy. So from now on I will change Friday's structure: Once a month I will continue to present an interior stylist, photographer, designer or another creative person that caught my attention in the series 'Happily Ever After'. And the other Fridays will be dedicated to my favorite snapshots. Today's the premiere of this new series.

Ever since I've got myself a proper DSLR camera, I can't help but snap around and sometimes I really like the pictures so I thought I'll share those snapshots with you. Today I've added two snaps - both of them taken this week in my home.

I tend to redecorate my home from time to time. So my little prints, vases, plants etc. keep traveling from one corner to the other. Currently, my yellow side table serves as a bright and happy stage for my Scandinavian candlesticks, my little globe, my beloved succulent and some fresh blooms. And this little vignette is carefully observed by a great Andy Warhol quote.

On my bedroom sideboard I've grouped some of my favorite vases into a visual prolongation of the big Olaf Hajek art print, that serves as a backdrop and colour inspiration. The pink, yellow, red, amber and turquoise hues are the main colours of the art print and mirrored in my little vase collection, among them the little pink, handmade vase from Fuerteventura, the yellow-turquoise cutie from Anthropologie, the turquoise crackled vase from a local store in Munich, the amber one from Nordic Bliss and the midcentury yellow-red vase from a local antiques store.
