Last month, during my trip to Israel, I had the pleasure of meeting my friend and travel photographer Sivan Askayo in Tel Aviv for a dinner (see us HERE). I was pretty lucky taking into consideration that Sivan is an avid traveler - mostly for her work she travels the world on a constant basis. And as a passionate traveler and restless inspiration hunter myself, both Sivan and I have a solid basis for our friendship.
During our dinner she told me about a project she hs worked on since 2010 and was now ready to launch. A project with a pretty alluring and intriguing name: Intimacy under the wires. I was curious to hear more about it and so she showed a few of her photos which are now part of her limited edition sold on Artfully Walls.
I loved the idea that Sivan found inspiration in something rather mundane, especially in cities in the south. Hanging laundry above streets is not so common here in Germany, but very normal in many warmer countries. And it was her domestic ground that set the tone for a series born out of her ongoing inspiration hunt: she snapped the first pics in Tel Aviv's Jaffa neighborhood and continued this series on various other trips to cities like Barcelona, Naples, Florence, Buenos Aires and many more. Whereas hanging laundry seems to be utterly mundane, it carries so much more for the curious observer: it tells an intimate story about its owners and ignites interpretations about the people wearing and using the exposed laundry.
Ten of her exclusive snapshots of the 'Intimacy under the wires' series can now be bought over on Artfully Walls.
Happy hump day!

Love her work! And isn't she such a great guide?!
ReplyDeleteShe is amazing and I love her work! Happy to call her a friend too:-)
DeleteI love this series! Sivan has such a good eye and this series has it all: it's colorful, makes you curious about who wears these clothes and who sleeps under the sheets and the shapes of the laundry are so very pretty. A beautiful birthday gift, Igor!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! I love her work and I am pretty happy to have one of her travel shots in my home too. It's not from this series but it is marvelous. Will show it soon on the blog.
DeleteI really like this. Such an original idea for a project! Even the angles in the images are so interesting.
ReplyDeleteShe has an artistic eye:-)
DeleteLove this Igor. What a wonderful take on something so simple and yet quite personal (other people's clothes). It's funny... I get aggravated by people hanging washing from their windows. In fact I believe our lease here at The Bakery has a clause that prevents residents from doing so. It always seems trashy to me. Yet the images above are colourful and real. They just seem natural. In the UK there is a stigma... hanging washing outside for all to see screams 'council' ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I think it's similar in Germany, I don't think it's allowed nor appreciated. But in the south of Europe it all looks so enchanting and intriguing - it's like an indispensable element for the typical photo motives.
DeleteI guess it is a cultural thing but to me, there is something in the fragrance of fresh laundry hanging out in the sun that is comforting and refreshing. And so many fond memories of the years spent in Venice during the university..
ReplyDeleteAnd now for our lovely friend from Belfast: Gerard, I missed it so much when I was living in Scotland that I thought "Why not?" Every time the weather allowed me, my clothes were hanging in the sun close to my window. : ) Sunlight is never enough! LOL
Good point Elena! It's the 'organic' way of laundry drying:-)) I'm sure it'll be hip again soon! :-)
