Urban Jungle Bloggers: My Gardening Secret

Hello urban jungle friends and green lovers! A new month has started and we are slightly gliding from mild and sunny autumn days into more gloomy and cooler winter days. November is a period not only of meteorological shifts, it also means a considerable change for your plants at home. Even more so if you have cacti and succulents at home like I do. So I will focus in this month's post on cacti and succulents and share 'my gardening secret' with you. Although I don't think it's a secret at all, but maybe it might be handy for green newbies and those of you considering the addition of cacti and succulents in your home.

Cacti and succulents are perfect green companions for small apartments and for busy urban folks. They require a minimum of care and still thrive and prosper happily. During the sunnier periods of spring and summer you can place your cacti and succulents on sunny places, windowsills, balconies, gardens. You water them depending on the weather every other week and fertilize them to make sure they get all the botanical nutrition they need. But when winter season comes upon us, your green friends will slide into botanical hibernation. This means you have to care even less for them, but you need to consider a few simple points for the perfect plant hibernation.

Small scale dwellers will need to find a nook in their homes that is less exposed to daylight and thus ideally a tad cooler. If you have no extra room or space like an unheated stairways, basement, an unheated extra room, try of find a corner of your apartment with the least sunlight exposure and try not to overheat the room (it's anyway not so good to live in overheated apartments for that matter). Group your cacti and succulents together and leave them there. Stop fertilizing them as of October/November until warmer spring days arrive in March. Stop watering them too. If they remain in a heated space, water them only rarely to avoid complete dehydration. But be stingy with water. They don't really need a lot.

Even though your cacti and succulents will go into hibernation over winter, look after them from time to time. And love them no less than in spring and summer. They will reward you with fleshy, vibrant greens and probably a few blooms coming spring. Happy urban gardening!

Ideas For A Happy Weekend

Phew, it's weekend my friends! And I am desperately in need of it, even though it's going to be a boiling hot one here in Munich. This week has been incredibly busy, chaotic, surprising and cool. But let me just put it down in a few bullet points what has marked this week:
  • I painted my entire apartment with a few feature walls in the most amazing grey shades 'Down Pipe' and 'Plummet' from Farrow & Ball. The apartment was a complete mess and I had a whole day of work to clean it up and make it livable again.
  • I sold my old Ikea sofa and made space for my new BoConcept sofa which will arrive very soon.
  • I guest blogged over on Tastesheriff and Eclectic Trends.
  • I went on a photo safari and wrote a travel report on Munich for a fabulous digital magazine.
  • I attended a fun (and hot) blogger event at the new showroom of Danish design brand Vitsoe. Soon more on the blog.
  • I was named one of the most inspiring interior design blogs by the German publication Wohnidee. Thank you!
  • I am working on a cool blogging idea with two inspiring ladies, Judith and Jocelyn.
Well, sounds like enough fun and work for a week. I will now lean back and think of ways how to avoid the 37 degrees Celsius (99 F) outside and the probably 45 degrees Celsius (113 F) in my apartment. Oy!

Happy weekend!

Before & After: Home Styling Part Two

Last week I wrote about my online interior styling class and I presented the first results - my coffee table and sofa styling. Today, I want to share the second part with you: styling a bookshelf and a console.

Justina Blakeney's online course was a truly fun experience as we were asked to take 'before & after' pics and apply the '8 principles of styling'. So when I embarked on restyling my upper bookshelf, I've noticed one thing: it was hopefully packed. We learned that things should have a bit of space 'to breathe' in order to avoid a cluttered look. So I took off all knickknacks and a good deal of books, played with vertical and horizontal placement, added a bit of texture and colour with my little House Doctor owl, a dash of bling with my faceted sapphire blue vase and some spring botanicals. When I look at the 'before & after' pic I must admit - this is definitely an improvement.

The console was the next task. I have a lovely wooden console (found at Butlers) with many little drawers painted in various grey and black shades. Funny enough, I'd sort of restyled my console just a few weeks before the course kicked off, so I felt like I had to enhance my styling rather than restyle it completely.

I liked the colour scheme that included greys, blues and greens so I looked around in my apartment and found a few goodies to add to the vignette: a green, vintage apothecary glass bottle, a weathered blue letter (both from Home Barn) and my quirky plant pot from Atelier Stella with a tiny cactus. I remembered the rule that items should be grouped in odd numbers, and a set of three has a great visual power especially if you combine different heights. Plus, the colours were perfect and ta-dah, my console styling was accomplished!

I really like the outcome of my little styling approaches. What do you think? Do you restyle your home frequently?
